Conical mechanical seals are a type of end-face mechanical seal used in rotating equipment such as pumps, mixers, and compressors. Their distinctive feature is the use of a conical or tapered spring that helps maintain axial pressure between the sealing faces. These seals are widely valued for their simplicity, compact design, and cost-effectiveness, particularly in light- to medium-duty industrial applications.
A conical mechanical seal consists of two main components: a rotating seal face (typically attached to the shaft) and a stationary seal face (mounted in the seal housing). These two faces are pressed together by a conical spring to prevent fluid leakage while allowing rotation. The conical spring provides the axial force needed to maintain contact between the faces, compensating for wear and vibration.
The taper of the spring offers some unique advantages. Unlike cylindrical springs, conical springs compress in a telescopic fashion, reducing the risk of buckling and allowing a more compact axial seal design. This makes conical seals particularly suitable where installation space is limited.
