The main goal of a clutch type seal is to improve reliability, reduce wear, and extend service life by controlling when the seal faces make contact.

In traditional mechanical seals, the seal faces are constantly in contact, even when the equipment is idle. This continuous contact can lead to unnecessary wear, increased friction, and potential damage during dry running (operation without lubrication). Clutch type seals solve this problem by incorporating a mechanism that separates the seal faces when the shaft is stationary or under low-speed conditions, minimizing wear and preventing damage. Once the shaft reaches operational speed, the clutch mechanism engages automatically, bringing the seal faces into proper contact to provide sealing.

Typically, clutch type seals are spring-loaded and use centrifugal force, magnetic force, or a combination of mechanical elements to control the clutch action. At lower speeds or when stopped, the springs may hold the seal faces apart. As the shaft rotates and centrifugal force increases, the clutch mechanism activates and pulls the seal faces together. Some designs also use magnetic clutches to achieve smooth, non-contact engagement and disengagement without physical wear on the actuation parts.

Clutch type seals are especially valuable in applications where the equipment frequently starts and stops, or where dry running at start-up is a concern. Common industries that use them include chemical processing, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, water treatment, and oil and gas. They are often used with double seals or gas-lubricated seals where minimizing friction is critical for ensuring safe operation and reducing maintenance needs.
